What material to use for component staking? | 18 January, 2010

Looking to find out what materials are commonly used for staking (aka. bonding) through hole components to the PCB in order to withstand vibration in a military (class 3) environment. Polyurethane coating would be applied after staking. I've found standards for the application of staking, but they never mention suitable materials. Thanks!

Usually the print specifies the material since the design is qualified with it in place. I've used several from Scotchweld 2216, Scotchweld DP190, Hysol E-20HP, to NASA outgassing qualified Masterbond 10HT.

We used to use Scotch DP460 for Apache helicopter electronics, and we mixed it with Cab-o-sil silica (texas snow) to thicken it so that it doesn't creep during cure.
