oil contaminated PCB cleaning | 29 January, 2010

We (Industrial Electronics Service Depot) have been using a dishwasher with success on dirty/contaminated boards but without BGAs. Now we have a CPU board with couple of BGAs on it and no experience/expertise.. Is the washing it and the compressed air way to go? Any additives that could facilitate the process? I would recommend the following paper entitled "Cleaning for Reliability Post QFN Rework" by Mike Bixenman (Kyzen) and myself (Aqueous Technologies). While it discussed cleaning under QFN's in a batch environment, it is also applicable to cleaning under BGA's. It discusses best practices as it relates to chemicals and equipment.

Questions are: * What kind of oil is this? Where did it come from? * In olden days, we used to pour oil on the wave solder pot to limit dross formation and loosen-up the solder. Miss that stuff, sigh. * Is there oil under the BGA? It's surface tension is much higher than water. We doubt it could squeeze under the gap.

I just browsed this article and found no mention of cleaning with a "sonic" washer. We have a PMR Systems Ultrasonic Stencil Cleaner. The manual says it works well on cleaning PCB's for varoius reasons. It works excellent for removing lead. We can watch the lead literally foam up with oxygen and fall off the board into the wash water in which is contained the PMR cleaning fluid which is basically detergent and silicates. I've asked the manufactureer about washing populated boards and they say there should be no problems except for possibly delicate parts. What is your opinion about sonic washers used for cleaning PCB's?

the board in question is from Foba Laser Engraver, it's a surface contamination coming from.. everywhere, a lot of moving parts that are lubricated. I'm now studding chemicals that we may use for our kind of rework & cleaning. We may think of modifying a dishwasher to change the washing cycles to suit better this kind of cleaning. Or may be we buy a Trident System, ;)
