Environmentally Certified Technologies | 22 June, 2000

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finally taken a progressive position by creating the Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program to verifiy the environmental safety, user safety and efficacy of products prior to their purchase and implementation. The California EPA has developed a program to actually certify the environmental integrety and user safety of a certain products. These programs have been of tremendous benifit in that they provide assurances to users that a technology (new or old) is sound and not subject to any new regulations that may render the technology obsolete soon after purchase.

Are there similar programs available in other countries? If so, what are they and how can I contact the program?

Excellent question! I'm not an expert on these matters, but I know that there is at least one Eurpoean program known as EMAS (can't remember what theacronym stands for) that addresses many of these issues. I will look into this for you and get back to this board with whatever I find, but in the meanwhile, you can look at the STMicroelectrronics web site for a little information on EMAS. The URL is http://us.st.com/stonline/index.shtml, and then click on the link labeled "environment". It will give you at least a bit of information until I can get back to you There are also several European standards on energy efficency, the most notable being the "Green Angel" certification. I don't have info at my fingertips, but will try to find it for you. . Again, if you need more information, contact me directly at 609-720-0014, or lgoldberg@chipcenter.com.
