Can any body help me that how can I check the strength of the 0603 capacitor & how much it should be? Is there any standard for the soldering strength of the Diffrent SMT packages. Manjeet singh

I'm not aware of a standard that provides an acceptable "strength" value for different packages, basically because there are too many variables. Component metallization type and geometry, pad shape, solder type, etc. At a company I previously worked for, we set up a DOE for internal acceptance and we used torque off strength. We made special holders for specific packages so that we could torque components to failure on a production board. Shear testing is more difficult on a production product because normally other components interfere with the test.

We agree with Bill. There's no standard, nor should there be.

Why are you concerned about this? What are you trying to accomplish?

I want to check this becuase we are exporting the PCB & there is problem of components missing at customer end in some PCB while we are doing 100% AOI & then ICT testing. These components are checked by both. there is no possiblities that the components can go missing from here.If there is smal mishandling then components are breaking at our end also.

When you break them where is the failure? Is it the solder joint (doubtful), the part termination, the body of the part, or the board? If in the solder joint, is it in the bulk solder or intermetallic? If in the part, what direction is the crack?

You can't create a "strength" test without knowing what the failure mode is.

This breaks the soldering not the body of the part. It breaks 90 degree from the length of teh componet. Is there any diffrence if I will use the solder paste of the type 4 for the 0603 componet.

Have you confirmed in an SEM that the break is in the solder and not in the termination? If not in the termination, is it in the intermetallic rather than the bulk solder? It's unusual for the break to be in the solder joint when chips are knocked off during handling. The solder joint is typically much stronger than the termination.

What type of components are these and how are the terminations constructed? A few years ago we had some 0603 varistors that had AgPd terminations. The termination metal went into solution in the solder joint and essentially left no mechanical connection between the solder and the ceramic body. We're in the high reliability market and no longer allow AgPd terminations in our designs.

The powder size of your solder is not related to this issue.
