Need Help Operating CSM84VZ | 29 December, 2010

Recently purchased a CSM84VZ, thinking that it was going to be a simple stand alone machine easy to program and i have now found out that is nothing like I expected. i have no computer to control the machine other than the hand held control that connects to the machine. the vision files are not in the machine. i get memory destroyed error codes when trying to use vision and as far as i can tell the feeder positions are set to 0.00. i do not have a MCH file or any idea as of how to loaded if I did. if anyone could guide me in the right direction helping set a feeder, pick up a component and place it i will be the best thing that it has happened to me in a long time.

i forgot to mention that i canot acces the run menu. i get an error code 215 system error 60.

I hope there is still someone out there using this old machines

thank you all for reading

Hello David, there are people here running these fine old machines. I have two, one I've been running for two years and another I've just acquired. It is not required to have a computer connected, but it will become handy for backing up and maintaining the various files the machine uses. Pretty much everything can be done through the hand held keypad. A major point is that all the operational data is held in static ram memory, backed up with a lithium battery. The controller has no disk drive and is not "pc-based". If you get the "memory destroyed" message it could be because the lithium battery has died or someone perhaps cleared the memory intentionally. Do you have the operating manual? Can you go to the "system" menu and see any parameter settings? Should be a bunch of XYZ coordinates for where cameras are located, XYZ travel limits, head offsets, etc. I will email you a link where you can download a .mch file to use as a guide. The items in the file may appear somewhat cryptic, but you can match them up with the "ufos" file descriptions in the manual to see how they translate to the actual menu items you see on the machine monitor. The machines can be set up various ways so the actual .mch settings for your machine will be somewhat different than mine.

Hello Tom, Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and offer your much appreciated help. I am downloading the files as I type and will check the model of my machine and your recomendations as soon as I get to the shop. I am glad that this is not the last machine of its kind and that this fourum exists.

Thank you

Error 215 is due to corrupt memory. I suggest that you start by replacing the Lithium battery on the Mother Board. Next, remove the cable from the Floppy unit and turn on the machine with it disconnected. Goto the SYSTEM menu and find the menu "DATA INITIALISE". (It only appears when the floppy unit is disconnected.) Clear the memory with this function. Power off the machine, then re-fit the Floppy cable. Boot up again. Their should be no "error code 215 system error 60" after clearing the memory. Do all the other work you need to do to calibrate the machine to a known good PCB. Do not forget to calibrate Vision Files 0 as your Fiducial and Vision file 1 as your QFP. Write me if you need help.

Thank you guys for the help.

Tom, i got the manual and as far as i can tell there is a lot of reading i need to do. Also got the MCH file but i do not have any idea as of how to imput to the machine. i will read the manual hopefully some of my questions will be answer.

the machine is a CSM84VZ model RCH40f Version 701 serial K98-290530

Jeff,

I will get the battery replaced today, in regards to removing the cable from the floppy unit, my machine doesnt have a floppy unit attached. I will replace the battery the memory is problably corrupted or incorrect if the battery is not good anymore so i will do a "DATA INITIALISE". but i am trying to figure out how to imput the mch info into the machine.

i will read the manue i got from Tom and see if that helps.

Thank you

David, Assuming your machine has a WHITE controler, not a SILVER controler, there is a floppy drive inside the front panel of the controler. (Remove the top cover to reach the 50pin cable.)

If Tom offers you a disk to try in the machine, go ahead. The disk must be in the floppy drive before the power is turned on. The machine must be able to read the USER.MCH file during boot-up. The disk cannot be formatted on a Windows machine (NTFS), it must be formatted in the machines UTILITY menu (Fat16 file system).

If Tom cannot help you over the phone, give me a call at 7pm your time (12 hour time difference). +64-417386694

Wow, there is a floppy drive hiding inside? I took a peek inside my unit when I first got it and didn't notice one. I will take a closer look! My second unit, that I just got, came with a grab-bag of odds and ends, and I found a ms-dos based utility for editing, loading and offloading the various machine files. I tried it and it seems to work. You will need to make up a DB-25 to DB-9 cable as described in the CSM manual, set the CSM com settings properly and it should work.

I removed the front cover of the controller box and found a cable secured to the right plate with cable ties but no floppy. the cable has a 50 pin connector. maybe is an option on your machine that my didnt get. I hope tom has better luck. I am going to make the wire to connect to a pc, but once i have the cable finish how do i connect to the machine? do i need special software to comunicate?

thanks for the phone number. i will check the time difference.

did you buy your machines on ebay? i did and the guy that sold it to me said that he was getting one ready to ship to Australia, maybe all of our machines came from the same place. mine also came with a box of misc spare parts but no software and only the operating manual but thanks to Tom now i have the service manual.

Regards

David

Follow that same link I gave you for the sample files, there is a zip of a file transfer utility specifically for these machines. (I sent you an email, too)

Enjoy, Tom

Both units have the 50 pin cable, but no drives are present. The service manual makes no reference to a disk drive (that I can find), is it possible that the floppy is a 'secret' factory tech-only service tool of some sort? Also, with the 50 pin cable, is it to be used with a SCSI drive?

David, If you have no floppy drive, then your machine is a pre 1990 or earlier machine. (Not CSM84VZ). These machines have a RAM memory with 14 programs max. Can you verify this for me with a picture of the inside of the front of the controler. (jr@hrltd.com.au). Also, the older machines have no daughter board at the front of the mother board. The later machines having a daughter board with 4 ROMs containing the software. I would suggest you slow down on changing the battery until this is verified.

Also, if you replace the 10 year Lithium battery, you must do it with power on. If you do it with power off you will loose everthing and the machine will default to Japanese. This means navigating SYSTEM/MACHINE-CONFIG./ENGLISH-JAPANES toggle.
