AOI: Golden Board vs Algorithm Based | 19 April, 2011

My company will be purchasing an AOI machine within the next 3-6 months and we are debating between several manufacturers and between "Golden Board" & "Algorithm" based systems. I've had some experience with YES Tech and have seen a couple of each kind last week at the APEX show, but I wanted to hear from current users about what they like and don't like about their machines. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Rodney

Hi, I would be happy to discuss the capabilities of both technologies, and more over the companies you are thinking about partnering with, if you would like to PM me. I have sold both technologies, Pattern Match and Algorithm based, and can dive deep into each. I am no longer selling AOI, so there is no bias on my part.

Let me know if you would like to chat...

We can find quite a few number of Pros/Cons on Template matching vs Algorithm Based.

But this morning I have explored a new technology on "Cyber Optic" AOI. The technology called "SAM" (Statistical Appearance Modelling).

As long as your manufacturing process is a normal distribution N(mean, sigma), the Cyber Optic AOI will perform well.

The only cons that I understood is this SAM may not suitable for high mixed low volumn since it need more samples (~30) to build up the library.

Anyway, you can explore the brochure from below link.

I've dealt with YesTech, Mirtech, and most recently CyberOptics, and so far my favorite is without a doubt the CyberOptics.

The Yestech (pattern match) is very easy to program and use but it took sooooo much up-keep to keep the false calls to a manageable amount. The Cyber is more of an algorithm based type of machine and it takes a long time to program from scratch when comparing to the YesTech, but I've found that up-keep is waaaaay less with this type of machine and false calls are very minimal and much easier to keep down.

Just my .02

Exactly.

And now a day, we are sourcing quite a number of alternative component. (e.g. IC, capacitor...)

Template matching may took long time to calibrate the variances too.

Desperate to look for cyberoptics representative to have a presentation to my superior.

Thks

i've been in manufacturing for 15 yrs. I used AOI with match patter as well algorithm base in one machine. Easy to program, can built in global library based on your cspecs or part number use in the manufacturing line. ROI can be achieved in the shortest period of time. Using this AOI reduces manhours that we have (remove all inspection by manual). The brand I used is the Mechatronic Systems. Advantage also is if they have software upgrade it will be free except there is a hardware change in the machine. They accept also suggestions coming from customer that they will include to the software they have.

I would go with Algorithm based, the reliability is better that I have seen in the feild.

Anyone try Cyberoptics SAM technology before?

My company do not have so many talent engineers to handle algorithm tuning :(

What to do?

Hi,

We are using CyberOptics Flex Ultra for 7 years, and believe me it requires a lot of time to create and tune up the programs. In my opinion, this machine is not suitable for high mix low volume production. Also we have Omron AOI, which is algorithm based, and program creation and tunning is faster compared to Flex, though programing is much much harder.
