Quad IVc Laser Align Extents

Quad IVc Laser Align Extents | 3 May, 2011

As I continue to add more components/feeders to our assembler, I add a new laser align extent for every pick. But if components are standardized (like 0805, SOT-23) is it necessary to have all individual extents or just an extent for each type? This would mean that all 0805 parts might reference extent #xx in their picks. I hope this makes sense, but I wanted to ask someone more experienced before modifying over 50 picks! Thanks

Parts that are the same size can share the same extent #. If you are placing 100 different 0805 components you will need only 1 extent.

Thanks for the answer, RLM, I couldn't find anything in the manual that was helpful. If I use a common extent for each component type, I need to identify those components that may be turned due to the feed type (tape, vibe). Is this where I would define a Theta in the pickup? So that the component, when picked and rotated, would present the same length/width as the extent? I tried some of this early on, but we had QuadAlign issues at the time - causing limit errors - so I abandoned picking with theta and made individual extents for rotated parts.

Yes, what you are thinking is correct. Assuming an 0805 capacitor parts that are picked from the front and back of the machine will be picked at 0 theta. Parts that are on the left or right will be picked at a 90 theta. This way they can all share the same extent#

OK, understood. In the case of SO14, I have some in vibe feeders and some in tape. The tape parts, when I set the extent up, would be picked at 0 Theta, because the part length is parallel to the Y axis. The vibe parts, which are perpendicular to Y axis, would be picked at 90 Theta. I assume if I have parts backwards (pin 1 orientation) then I would use 180 or 270 Theta to get them rotated correctly. This should make all parts "look the same" to Quadalign, correct?

You got it. You are aware that Quad defines the theta by steps. 0 = 0, 90 = 6000, 180 = 12000 and 270 = 18000.

RLM, you have been very helpful! Let me try this on you: We have two IVC's, one with a conveyor and Quadalign, the other with a workholder platform and Cyber-optic. I just ran the first successful assembly on this second system, but the extents had to be adjusted, mainly the Z height. I understand the Cyber-optic system is not as good as Quadalign, but we haven't decided to buy a Quadalign unit, although we are discussing it. I have had a time getting the machine up, mainly because it stalls on init with the Cyber-optic controller not initializing (my assumption since it stalls the init). I suspect some dirt/corrosion on/in the backplane connector, but haven't crawled in to pull things apart yet. There is no information on calibrating one of these units, do you have any suggestions on "tuning up" the cyber-optic unit to get the best we can out of it?

Sorry but I have never worked with a machine that has the Cyberoptics system. Have you tried talking to PPM (www.goppm.com), They have been very helpful to me.

Hello Doug, There is no tuning up of the cyber-unit. From the symptoms you describe......sounds like the white cable that plugs into the cyber is intermittent. Maybe you can find one somewhere and try that. The cyber unit is a closed assy. and was made in a cleanroom. Cyberoptics does not support those old units anymore but you may be able to find parts.

Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion, Bobpan. I'll start looking for a replacement coax cable. Would we be better off to look for a Quadalign system and replace the Cyberoptic unit?

Sorry about taking so long to respond.......The quadalign is a retrofit. You cant just buy a quad-align and mount it on the machine. There is different firmware, cables, and other stuff.

Good luck

Yes, it looks like it would involve quite a bit... I guess it partly depends on finding the hardware/firmware, possibly from a donor machine. But it might not be worth the cost. At the moment I'm running all product on the first machine with Quadalign. I'm full on feeders but so far I can run all products with only a couple component switches, so the second machine may not be as important in the long run.
