Universal conveyor help | 29 September, 2011

I recently bought a used Universal conveyor #5362I. All I need it to do is pass through boards from 1 machine to the next without operator intervention. The only way I can get it to accept a board from the upstream machine is by pushing the yellow button. Is anyone familiar with these machines? I need to know what the 3 buttons do. Thanks for any and all help.

You need SMEMA communication beteen your machines and your conveyor.

Smema is connected and works and the 2 machines will communicate. It seems as though the conveyor wants to see a board eveery 30 secs or so, If the upstream can give it one in this timeframe everything is good. If not it times out and the yellow button starts to flash. Pushing the yellow button resets the conveyor and moves the board through.

Now I see - not sure. The only trouble I've had that was similar was because an electronic eye on one of the stages was seeing a machine that was installed a couple inches over the top of the conveyor. We had to install a flat black plate on the machines paneling over the top of the sensor. Maybe check the alighnment and sensitivity of the optical sensors? Additionally, if you have lots of holes in your panels, i've found it works best to align the optical sensors at about a 10 deg. tilt looking downstream. If that's not it, it sounds like a SMEMA software setting on your machines as it seems like the upstream machine is telling the conveyor there's a board coming at all times. Check the downstream optical sensor in your machine for functionality, too. Adjust sensitivity if needed.

The conveyor is programmed to turn off the belts and go into an error condition after 30 seconds if the board has not passed the output sensor on the conveyor. The intent is to indicate a board jam and prevent damage to the board or belts. On conveyors feeding into an oven the timer (T12 I think) is typically increased to about one minute or more. You may have the documentation in the pocket in the front cover of the base. You need the Allen Bradley Hand Held Programmer to change this timer. Where are you located?

As far as the buttons go, White = pause for inspection when depressed, lit when active

Green = pass after inspection when lit you need to press the button, when flashing its waiting for the upline machine,

Yellow/orange = when flashing indicates a jam, error, power fail, or someone pressed and released the Estop button. Press to resume, it will then attempt to shuttle the board to the end and if after 10 seconds or so no board hits the eye it assumes the conveyor is empty.

Not all conveyors have working lights, even our new ones about 50% have lights that work.
