UL - Underwriters Lab - Solder | 10 October, 2011

I have a few questions regarding Solder products being UL Listed or Recognized. I am aware that UL does test solder material (conductive material) using the UL 746 standard. However, i would like to know if UL actually recognizes the conductive material by it self once the testing is deemed successful. For example having a solder paste that has a UL certificate for safety logo , or the UL recognized logo on the product itself. if anyone can help me understand the Role of UL in the alloy/smt industry i would greatly appreciate that.

UL746 Standard for Polymeric Materials is used for testing plastic enclosures used in electronic assemblies. Look here http://www.ul.com/global/eng/pages/corporate/contactus/faq/industries/plastics/

We're unaware of UL involvement in solder. Bare boards are tested to UL796. Solder mask must meet UL94. Soldering irons are UL tested. Some components (switches, terminals, connector, etc) are UL tested.

are you familiar with UL 796, Printed Wiring Boards i believe they discuss some standards and test procedures regarding conductor material, and solder material but im not sure if UL actually lists solder material by it self.

Here is copy of UL796: http://www.innovative-circuits.com/docs/UL%20796.pdf

We'd consider this copy unofficial, but it probably tells you what you want to know.
