Senju wave opinions?

Senju wave opinions? | 21 February, 2012

We finally can't avoid adding wave solder to our process anymore. For lead-free, medium sized wave I'm leaning towards mid 2000s senju units as the best fit. I've never run their equipment. Opinions?

As a point of reference for our general capabilities, we have a late 90s MPM AP-25 printer, a pair of late 90s GSMs, a 2007 Vitronics reflow oven, plus an old heller oven and a semi-auto quad printer we use for a curing line. So nothing fancy, but reasonably solid, workhorse type stuff.

We do some fairly chunky connectors and a lot of 4 layer, 2 to 4 ounce copper boards. Throughput is about 10,000 boards (1000 panels or so) a month.

Looking to spend between $20k and $30k on a wave machine. Smaller solder pot to limit the up-front solder cost would be nice. If not senju, recommendations?

Thanks, John

I can help if you want to contact me at Manncorp. I have our 16.350 wave solder I can sell you and even putting brand new solder in it you should be under 30K with a 2 year warranty. Email me at cellis@manncorp.com or call at 215-830-1200 I will add a 2 year warranty at no cost.

Thanks, Chris

Give some serious thought to what your service options are for one of these machines. Senju doesn't have a big presence here in the US and I'd want to know where a serviceman would need to travel from if you get into the deep stuff.

This is a fair point. I've been more or less thinking that a wave machine is like a reflow oven - a box with heaters that's easy to maintain in house. Are they more troublesome than that?

I prefer big-boy toys. Manncorp, novastar and the like aren't on the table. Especially manncorp.
