I recently heard an interesting requirement and wanted to poll the fine members of this forum for what their interpretation would be, and if any standard would exist: "Maintain the bill of material in an anti-magnetic environment." Thanks in advance to all that reply, Dave F., I'm also interested in your thoughts if you have a moment.

Are you talking about storing parts in an anti magnetic environment

Sorry Michael, I have no answers for you, but I do have plenty of questions, which I assume are the same questions that you have buzzing in your head. I've searched the net with Google, Technet Archives and the SMTA Knowledge base and have received bupkis in return

a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. we had a requirement for a specific part. We stored it in a room in a plastic container on a wooden shelf and had to rent a Gauss meter and walk around and take measurements to prove that it was anti magnetic. It was stupid at the time because the customer got it in his head that magnetism was causing failures . Now I am sure there probably parts that can be sensitive to high magnitic fields. My guess is that just storing them would not be enough the whole process would have to be monitored.

Thanks to all of you that have replied and those that may eventually reply. We are feeling better now that you experts with many years of experience have not indicated that this is as common as ESD or Moisture Sensitivity Awareness to the point that we all should compliant.

We take the statement to mean that we have to "maintain the raw materials contained within the BOM" in an anti-magnetic environment. But then we are curious as to when this is no longer a concern? Ater Kit Setup, SMT, Wave or Selective Solder, Final Assembly, ICT/Functional Test....etc.

In the event of a misinterpretation, we've been reading standards that relate to sensitive equipment during power-on with much more luck e.g. Electromagnetic Compatibility Standards - IEC 61000-6-1, IEC61000-4-3.

During this inital "meet and greet", engineering was not a part of, only informed that magetism was a big problem in the past.

Based on your responses we feel better now with approaching the customer and requesting them to be more specific with their storage and isolation concerns. We will post an update as we learn more.

Thanks again for your valuable time SMTNetters!

Exactly what parts in question might have issues with magnetism? Can you be more specific?

Logic Circuits Based on Magnetic Semiconductors

One problem with increasingly dense circuits is heat dissipation. A solution was recently unveiled by Northwestern University researchers using an entirely new logic circuit family based on magnetic semiconductor devices.

A paper describing the new technology findings was presented recently at the International Symposium on Nanoscale Architectures held in the Netherlands.

How about this ... If your customer plans to provide the BOM on media that could be affected by magnetic fields, might the customer want to be assured that you have an established process to the protect that media from magnetic fields?
