TO247 surface mount soldering the tab? | 20 November, 2012

has anyone ever tried running these devices through a reflow process soldering the tab to the pcb then soldering the TH connections? we have a device which needs fitted but we are soo tight for space that we cannot use a conventional screw/nut to hold the device in place so i was wondering if the above was possible and would it create any other issues ?

In Texas Instruments AN-1364 they say "The TO-247 package is not recommended for surface mounting".

We use an LM2575 switching regulator, and have had no trouble reflow soldering it. It is made for that purpose, so no big tab with the bolt hole, and the leads are pre-bent for SMT. Note that soldering the part to the PCB doesn't really give the heat anyplace to go, so it doesn't make sense to put a TO-247 on a PCB without a big heatsink, in most cases. But, I'll bet they have an SMT version of that package, too.
