Many board assemblers have replaced wave solder machines with selective soldering machines. * Often, modern board designs do not have the luxury of being properly designed for wave soldering of the few PTH components that remain essential to the proper function of a board. * Some wave soldering machines are big and expensive to operate. * Selective soldering machines can be flexible to operate.

is wave soldering the only option?

Depends on design? can you use a pin in paste process to accommodate SMT and through hole? are you in full control of your design?
