Conformal Coating Masking

We've used masking tape and peelable (pink) mask to mask our boards before conformal coating for a long, long time. This is a huge time sink, and increases our lead times (particularly because of the cure time for the pink mask).

What are other companies doing? We will probably be getting a conformal coating machine in the near future, but we're not expecting it to completely eliminate our need for masking.

In the past, I've used kapton tape for masking, as well as masking tape and solder mask as you've described.

I've also used dummy connectors, or connector caps to cover connectors/pins.

In the end, though, I'm not sure any of these methods decreases the time involved.

In that same past life, we did buy a conformal coating machine, and, as you surmise above, it did not eliminate the need for masking. It did help minimize the amount of masking we needed to do; but, did not eliminate it completely.

Cheers, ..rob

Seal and peel would be the solution to your curing time problem. It’s a thermoplastic hot melt which air cures as quick as 30 seconds.
