Hello all,

I was wondering who out there has an F1 or F1-5 system used at post-paste. If so, what type of auto-insertion equipment are you using on that line and what is the cph placement capability. Does your F1 system keep up with the cycle time of the machine (i.e. boards exiting the oven). I'm curious because we are looking at purchasing an F1-X system for a line that can do 28K parts per hour. It's not super fast but I was wondering if the F1 could keep up? Thanks for your help.

In a past life I ran F1 systems post placement / pre reflow behind a MyData My12E, so it didn't exactly have to keep up with a speedy chip shooter, but it did pretty well.

The AOI would end up being the bottle neck some of the time, but not because of the AOI inspection time, but because we had it setup with a downstream review station right after the AOI that could feed back into the AOI for re-inspection if anything need to be corrected after the first pass.

We have inline reworkers, so this time has been factored in. We currently use Siemens S25/20 machines with M1 systems. The placement machines run a little slower than the AOI at times so there is time to perform review, most of the time. It's not the rework that will be the bottleneck with the new machine, but the review time, which is done in-line. The new line will run anywhere from 2-5 times faster (estimated) than the older machines, depending on optimization. Unfortunately the new line will be building are most problematic boards with the most process defects, so the amount of time with review is a major concern. This is why I am not certain about the F1s ability to keep up. The review time may cause a bottleneck at the AOI.

What was the placement rate for your MyData? Did it have a single mount head or a multi-mount head?

I believe it was rated around 20K CPH, and the F1 outpaced it most of the time, including review, rework, and re-inspection.

Our current machines are rated for 20K/hour. The new ones are 30K/hour, hence the concern with the speed of the F1. Hypothetically, if your machines were running 50% faster, do you believe your F1 would keep up. This is not scientific, I'm just wondering what your opinion is.

I think right now there is a comfortable buffer built into our process. If our pnp were 50% faster I believe that buffer would be cut out of the equation, so while I think it would be fine on most of our builds, I believe there would be builds that would be backed up at AOI.

I think it would be borderline. Like you said, not a ton of science injected into that conclusion, so take it as such. Do you know what the average review time for an assembly is for you guys?

The review time varies depending on the product. But it could take anywhere from 10s to over a minute depending. That doesn't leave much time left on this new line. What AOI are you using now and with what equipment?

I'm at a different, smaller company now. I'm using YesTech now as well, but only as post reflow inspection later in the process, no pre-reflow.

So what AOI system are you using and what auto-insertion equipment is on the line?

I suppose I worded that poorly, we run a B2 bench-top unit later on in the process (QA area to be exact) so it isn't in line with anything and doesn't have to keep up with anything feeding it upstream. And we run Juki equipment.
