Hi We produce electronic pcboards for the aircraft industry. Some of our clients think that the thickness of the varnish left is proportional to the intensity of the blue color of uv's pigments in the varnish. Out off, we know that is not true. Then I look for articles , advices or documents that describe the reality and how it is explained. Have you? Thank You very much

We've had similar "disputes" with our quality department. A technical engineer from Nordson told me that the flourescents in the coating can look faint depending on the angle in which you look at the surface as well as how solder joints reflect the light which make it look like they aren't coated. Also, the flourescent is an additive to aid in inspection, not the actual coating. If there is doubt to the existence of coating, lightly scrape a spot with a sharp object, the shavings will be white.

I think it is useful just to see where varnish should not be (eg connection parts). it is necessary to use another method to measure the thickness.

Contact the coating manufacturer to get their response. We use many different coatings every day and they all glow differently but that has no affect on the coating itself. As stated earlier, it's job is only as an inspection tool to identify where coating is or is not. It has very little bearing on thickness.
