likely something loose in the z or theta axis. Motor overruns and is corrected but goes too far then gets corrected back. it sets up an vibration and can make a lot of noise. best guess is that the spring is broke in the z rack.

Thanks for the reply Larry, I've checked the springs and they look ok, I have swapped them just to make sure. What I have noticed while manually moving the head up & down, there seems to be a sticking point, I have checked the rails and they are clean, could it be the motor that is damaged?

yes, in old age Z motors do fail on the machine. also, the spring I am talking about is in the rack assembly. there is a split gear which engages the motor gear and it has a spring which maintains constant engagement with the gear. it is small and hard to see. but if the z shaft is sticking and it is not a lubrication problem you might be looking at a motor. it is best not to swap the motors as they have to be aligned at the correct zero phase which will require a special procedure. call me directly if you need help 267-374-8173
