In regards to PCB assembly, what defects can be attributed to inadequate board support fixtures or systems?

A few of the more common defects

If bridging or insuffienct deposits occur on the printer, one of the first things to check is the tooling.

Misplaced hard tooling pins or poorly designed fixtures have a nasty habit of breaking components on side A when side B is being printed.

Misplaced vacuum ports can actually pull solder through vias, watch for this when designing fixtures.

Skewed or missing components may be traced back to the tooling on reflow. An example would be a cell phone riding on a pallet. There must be proper clearances and support built into the fixture for things like switches that may hang off the boards

A flexible array support system is superior in the following categories discussed in the 'tooling classes' thread.

-High Flexibility -Effective on a variety of products -Low operator intervention -Conforms to PCB, so it is both accurate and repeatable -Very low machine downtime -Very cost effective when all factors are considered

This technology has been driven by products such as memory modules, where you have: 1. Thin boards 2. Routing 3. Densely packed components on both sides 4. Fine pitch A routed plate usually comes back completely routed, causing bridging in many areas. Hard pins may be nearly impossible to locate. Compliant pins systems are the best way to go in many cases.
