Thinking of changing Pick and Place from Quads | 10 October, 2015

I've been running Quads for over 10 years, and I love them. I've had almost every model, from the 100, to our current IVCs, and QSP2. We are getting busier, and I'm thinking about upgrading. I have TONS of feeders, so the simple solution would be to find another QSP, or a QSV, but I also want to think about switching to something else. What are some good options that are newer technology (less than 5 years old if I'm going to change)? What advantages are there to the other brands? I already know the pitfalls of the Quads, and I know how to keep them running. Learning all that again on a new brand is a bit scary (unless I buy brand new). Suggestions?

You should do a bit of research into Mirae Placement machines.. they took over the Quad machines and built on them so your feeders may still be compatible... I only know this because I spoke to an agent last week - I have never used quad or Mirae..

ASM would be my top choice for any type of production. solid hardware, combined with very powerful software - you can really place everything with these machines. Juki is nice too. Very durable - good hardware. Software though is not so good.

I couldn't be more pleased with Panasonic. We've upgraded from MPAV's and MSR's to CM602/DT401 and now their NPM platform. NPM's are extremely fast and accurate. Their auto pickup position teach is great especially if you're running any 0402 2mm pitch or smaller components. Auto tray teach as well. We have their parts verification system that will lock out the machine if the correct part is not scanned in to the correct slot.

Support in our area (Southeast) is fantastic; typically next day if we are down. Their engineering team is easy to work with. We developed custom nozzles together for certain LED's.

Any major brand (Samsung, Juki, Panasonic, Fuji) will work, most important is what service and support you will get *after* you buy the new machine. Once the machine is set and run, the most annoying part is to have downtime waiting for support questions or spare parts while your production planning count on this machine to fill customer orders. So I would pick this one which have best after sale support.

We have had very good after sale support from Mycronic (Mydata). They can do high volume (speed) but where they outperform many other brands is their lower setup times. If you do high mix, low/medium volume I would recommend them.

I've dealt with MyData, Assembleon, Fuji, and Juki over the last 9 years with the majority being MyData and Juki so I'll talk about them.

MyData was very nice for high mix/low volume due to the ease of setup and smart feeders, but I felt like I was always replacing parts, working on them, and had a lot of consumables to replace.

I run Juki machines now, and while they do have a few drawbacks one of my favorite aspects is how little I'm on the floor working on them. They're tanks, and maintenance is a breeze. Pretty low overall cost of ownership.

Have to second Phil's assessment of Juki. Been running for over 10 years; rarely break; when they do service is quick. Maintenance costs are consistently 15% of our sister companies running Fuji.
