Has anyone use both methods of depaneling on PCB breaktabs? meaning v-score at the edge of the pcb and mouse bites on the opposite side of the tab (break out panel)? Thanks

Enough pluses and minuses to get things started are: * Mouse bites (+) boards can be irregularly shaped, no board redesign (-) no one knows how to seperate the things, requires layout consideration * Singulation (+) boards can be irregularly shaped (-) expensive machine, expensive nre, kinda noisey, requires layout consideration * Routing (+) can be as cheap as a Sears $50 router (-) expensive nre, very messy, noisey, requires layout consideration * Scoring cutters (+) cheap, requires little board space (-) requires rectangular board, tough to control in fabrication, saging during soldering can limit the number up in a panel * Shearing similar to scoring (+) cheap, requires little board space (-) requires rectangular board, requires large keepout

Thanks Dave for the reply. I understand there is + and - to each process. We have been doing v-score for a long time and for the most part it has work for us. As PCAs become more dense and components are squeezed to use most of the PCB space, it now brings a concern for flexing during depaneling and risk for damage on those component very close to the break tab. An expensive machine is not an option right now so I'm trying to figure out if I can do a v-score and mouse bites on each of the tabs. I will have to consider if my fab house would charge extra for such request.

If there are too many components on the board and many components are standing near the board edge,to use a depaneling machine is a simple way,but a machine is needed, another possible way is to design and make a simple fixture,it holds the board firmly(especially hold the board edges near the v-score firmly),and use a gripper to grip the tab and turn in 90 degree to bend the tab off the board, (the gripper should be in similar shape with the tab for more touching surface)

If you end up buying a depaneling machine/robot, the guys at Pentagon EMS are very good at making fixtures. Once they have the specifications of your machine all you will have to send them is your panelized drawing of your board. In extreme cases you may have to send in an unpopulated/populated board.

Depaneling methods such as V-scores and various hand-break methods may be risky. Reliably and repeatably controlling the forces required to depanel the PCB is difficult. If a ceramic capacitor is damaged, for example, the defect may then show up as a field failure. These kind of defects can slip right through a functional test.
