Do any of you repair your Samsung feeders for the SM421 machines in house?

We have some that just don't power up. It's hard to trouble shoot without being able to hook them up. Do any of you have a stand-alone docking station to be able to apply power to the pins while troublehsooting?

Hello, we used to repair them fairly easy at my previous company. Many of ours had problems, because operators bad handling. If you have a problem with feeders not lighting up, you better try to switch the pcb from one feeder to another and to check again if it lights up. If it doesn't then for sure you know that there is something wrong with the electronic part of the feeder.

By chance do you know anything about how to fix them when they fail to feed? They are dropping quick and we haven't been able to successfully fix them without them failing again.

Thanks, Andrew

I'm not sure it would explain your feed issue, but the main thing that we have found to cause problems is the two nylon gears that pull the tape. The teeth get bent, and they don't mesh together as well, causing the tape to not pull correctly.

Or the shutter wheel needs lubricated.

We also have possible bad air cylinders, but have not been able to do much to fix that.

hello, my colleague ProcEng1 is right. The main problems are the gears, which easily are stuck with foil, the shutter, which has to be lubricated and not bend. Air cylinders on the machine have to be changed if you have misfeeds still. They look pretty special, but can be replaced. If the feeders dont light up, maybe you can try to see if the problem is the position or the feeder, by switching its placement position and see if it lights up again. The contact for the electronic part also has to be clean and maybe sprayed with contact spray.

I have a cart of 56 of them that will not feed, or if they do they its sporadic. I will feed 10 times in a row, and then not feed at all. Have adjusted the arm on the air cylinders but that hasn't fixed them and if it did, it was temporary. All of this is if using the electronic button or when it's on the 411 or 421.

Interesting. If all 52 of them fail, you need to change one special part that is controlling the air cylinders, I forgot the name, it was long time ago I used the machine. I there a possibility to test them on other machine, maybe some other company? How many feeders do you have at general? For me 52 seems like a big number.

You could try changing the SMC pneumatic cylinder?

We had a few that needed them replaced, we would get a pick error from them and the part would not be presented in the tape pocket (as if the tape doesn't push far enough to click over the ratchet system) we got some replacement cylinders orders, swapped them over and voilĂ .

Is this typical for the SMxxx machines? I had considered getting one but not sure how much headache the feeders are.

In my opinion, the machines are great. We have 6 of them. Feeders do a lot of work and need some maintenance.

We have over 400 feeders, and our maintenance guy gets about 6 a week to fix.

6/400 per week seems high? 1.5% failure rating, technically close to 75% annual failure rating. Is that normal for other manufacturers?

No idea.

They are also being "failed" by the operator. If they have a part that won't pick consistently, they often blame the feeder and tag it and put it in for maintenance.

He usually checks it for functionality, makes sure all screws are tight, cleans up the tape gears (that always seem booger-ed up) and puts them back out.

Some of our feeders are 8 or 9 years old. Unfortunately we weren't logging maintenance on them like we are now, so I don't know if the majority of the failures are 9 years old or 2 years old.

Its not typical. Our feeders are 8 years old as well we have had 6 or so feeders in the last 6 months, we have over 300 feeders across two machines. They do see a lot of service and nothing lasts forever.. you can keep up with the preventive maintenance but if a seal fails in the solenoid nothing will prevent that.

Dear Sir, Regarding the problem of the SM feeder doesn't power up, the following test steps are sorted out. Once it is not clear or you can't solve the problems you have, please contact with me if you want. My whatsApp is: +86-13823675048, skype is : sophyluo1985 . I will try my best to help solve it.

1. you can try to see if the problem is the position or the feeder, by switching its placement position and see if it lights up again. And you also need to check if the problem caused by poor contact. If yes, you need to change a power line of the feeder.

2. If feeder doesn't still power up, Please check and clean the contact pin of the feeder which doesn't power up. If the contact pin is missing, please install it

3. If feeder doesn't still power up, Please try to switch the control pcb from a good running feeder to the unpower up feeder to check again if it lights up. Just like Mr. Buckcho said.

4. If feeder doesn't still power up, then, please check the handle contactor switch.
