Storing OSP PCBs | 26 June, 2019

We are considering storing OSP coated PCBs in nitrogen. Will this extend OSP life ? Is the eventual failure of OSP due to oxygen eventually reaching the copper over time ?

OSP is water based so guessing more involved is evaporation and dilution from humidity.

From memory this may have been something to do with loosely bound electrons to the nitrogen atoms that could be easily freed up compromising the coating, but I'm getting old and my chemistry was decades ago.

Personally, I hate it and would use something else if I was planning on storing boards, or if already stuck with the boards get them stripped and re-coated when you need them.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately our customer has spec'd it in. We are trying to do better at ordering only enough PCBs for each run ...

Kee OSP PCB dry and sealed with dryer is enough, PCb supplier will tell you how to store it.
