Do you mean iron, or gun?

What is the application?

Check these out: https://www.promationusa.com/quick-usa-ts1200

Great technology and thermal feedback loop without breaking the bank.

We use JBC irons here, and I have to say that they are the best I have ever used. https://www.jbctools.com/

PhilC,

How much do you pay for solder tips though?

I know they aren't cheap, but used properly, mine last quite a few months, and they work so well, that I am still in favour of them. Tips range in price, but our work buys in bulk, saving some money.

JBC is a great station (no doubt) - I've had the opportunity to use both. I suppose it depends on who is flipping the bill. Performance wise, the QUICK TS Series is nearly identical to the JBC Station and consumables are a fraction of the cost. Cheers!

Interesting. Not heard of that one, or tried, so will check it out.

The response from SolderingPRO is quite amusing, considering he's the OWNER of Promation, distributor of Quick soldering irons in the US. By the way, Quick is a cheap, Chinese knockoff brand that has virtually no support in other countries other than China. You are better off going with a Metcal or PACE if you are located in the US or Europe. JBC has great performance at an EXORBITANT cost, whether buying in bulk or not.

Jchris,

I'll bite: - I beleive in transparecy - yes, I am the VP of PROMATION USA (a 5 time technology award winning company with an industry recognition in providing Award Winning Customer Service). I think that speaks volumes for how we support our customers; and how our customers view our support.

Truthfully, I suppose the great thing about these forums is: everyone is entitled to provide their opinion and experiences (here) in support of others.

I was merely attempting to quantify "best" as: Price, Performance, & Support

Cheers!

Metcal? Really? I tried them, and found them to be lacking in ability for my needs. Soldering anything with a lot of copper resulted in the tip "sticking" to the PCB, and it was very slow to respond when in use. The JBC units might not be cheap, but they work so well.

Maybe a cheap unit is OK if you are using it for personal use, and not soldering many joints, but I can easily be soldering 1000+ components on some days, and the JBC just works.

I guess it all depends on your specific requirements.

Personally I'd take a Metcal MX500 over a 130W JBC every day, and we had hundreds at the last place. However, here we have lots of JBC's, and my engineers and solderers swear by them. Both are good irons and like any you need to get your tip choice right. Both do smaller versions and I'm not impressed with either, but we need the ability to solder anything at any bench so a good powerful iron is a must. Not played with the Chinese irons referred to earlier but happy to try if there are any free samples with a wide range of tips going!

Unlike Solderpro, I'll admit I'm just a bit biased towards PACE's new ADS200 High Powered Professional Soldering Station. Up to 120 Watts of pure power in an inexpensive, all metal package ($239 in the US), as powerful as a Metcal, JBC and Hakko, yet the point to point tips are less than US$12 each. Made in beautiful North Carolina USA (and NOT China as are Metcal, Hakko, Quick, et al). Check out our YouTube video:

I also live in NC (mainly in the winter) but I think we are giving too much time to this. Most product is made off shore these days anyway.

Based on the lack of participation by the OP you may very well be right as far as how much time this discussion merits.

For all we know he may very well have been looking for one of these:

I own a metcal for the high precision work 1500$ in 1992 tips $60 in 1992 and have only used one tip in all that time, have horses holves for large pin devices, precision points for 0402 and a largest tip for service work. Also have Hakkos for bulk production TH on SMT boards. Excellent irons there is also a Chinese copy which is compatible. For Service Desolder work have several PACE, Metcal, and an Australian brand I cant recall. These are all problematic products. Not so much the product but solder fumes and dross removed from a board always manage to block nozzles and filters. If any company can come up with better desoldering tools I am all ears!

Concerning your desoldering equipment, we have made major improvements to prevent solder clogging on PACE Solder Extractor handpieces. Replacing the venerable SX-80, the new SX-100 (and SX-90) Solder Extractor has been improved so that is does not clog. The modular heater has been re-engineered to transfer heat better through the length of new SX-100 Tips. The new SX-100/SX-90 Tips will not clog because the isolated hot solder path is designed to stay well above solder melt temperature, preventing even lead-free solder from solidifying. Extra mass was added to SX-100/90 tips to allow extra heat to travel down end of stainless steel solder transfer tube, while stainless steel tube itself has also been widened and flared on the end to eliminate solder clogging. Depending on the age of your PACE Solder Extractor, it might be as easy as buying the new style SX-100/SX-90 Tips and using them instead of your older tips.

The best one is NOT one of the guns that the sales reps had to be deceiving to get their promotional pitch in without being up front on who he was or the other rep who tried to capitalize on the other A-holes deceiving tactics.... RIDICULOUS

Contact 3 or 4 local/regional sales reps, get some demos brought in and find out for yourself... You don need to be Einstein to figure some of this sh!t out... Or believe the sales vultures BS if you just don't get it....

Hi! What is the best soldering gun? I would recommend the Weller 9400PKS 120V. I think it is the best. I have been using it for more than a year and I was satisfied. If in doubt, check out the best Soldering Guns review at https://solderingironguide.com/reviews/best-soldering-guns/
