First PCB and it didn't work | 6 January, 2020

Hello everyone!

I have had this idea in my head to DIY a desktop KVM (without the V so I guess just a KM) board that I can solder USB A headers to with a DPDT switch. I designed the board and when I thought it was all good to go I proudly sent it off to be fabricated. I got it back and only one of the 3 USB A ports worked. Basically I'd like for multiple USB A headers to pass through a single toggle to output from one of 2 data out USB headers. I will attach the PCB design to this thread, if anyone can help me figure out what I did wrong. I suspect it's the fact that I added a copper plane so that the grounds would all have a common ground but I don't know for sure.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mikey,

Your signal pins (2 & 3) for USB1, 2, & 3 are all connected together so there is no way of splitting the incoming signals from the 3 ports. Normally there would be an IC (a USB hub controller) switching between the signals so that the PC knows which one of the 3 devices is inputting at that moment. See page 6 of https://www.maxlinear.com/ds/xr22404.pdf as an example block diagram.

Hello Mikey, I am curious, why did you send your board out for manufacturing? Why didn't you build the prototype yourself?
