I purchase a leadfree aven solder pot 300w.

We are wanting to pre tin power and ground wires prior to soldering onto pcb.

I have some anti-erosion flux cored wire solder from koki S03x7Ca-70m 1.6mm.

Can this solder be used? If not what is typically used?

Do I need to apply flux to the wire before dipping.if required what kind?

I have never added anything but bar solder to a solder pot so I have no experience with adding flux cored wire, but I have to imagine that it would smoke like crazy and gum up the sides of your crucible before you ever touched a wire to it.

We use whatever no-clean liquid flux is available at the time. Our production materials guy likes to shop for deals.

You'll want to chop your solder into "bite sized" pieces for your pot, by the way. A bolt cutter or a band saw are a couple of ways to do it without ruining other precision tools.

It's up to you for the alloy you use, but there are several (some common and some proprietary) like SAC305, SAC307, SN100, SN100c, etc..

If you're not familiar at all with solder types it would be best to talk to a local rep that you trust. Hopefully they'll be able to help you make a choice that works well for your application.

If you add any "flux cored" wire solder to the pot make sure you have ventilation as the flux will burn off and smoke like crazy. This solder pot is like any used in a wave or selective solder, no flux. The flux is added to wire prior to dipping just as a PCB in a wave or selective solder, the flux is applied to PCB prior to hitting the molten solder. As others have mentioned, SN100C or SAC305 alloys are both good RoHS solders. THe flux you use is determined on whether you are running a low-residue (no clean) process or a water soluble (have to clean) process.

Hi, 1. do not use flux-cored wire- the smell is bad and flux will evaporate anyway at the time of solder wire melting. 2. as suggested use solder bars, something like this: 3. keep in mind your main process is ROHS, do not mix different alloys(and not Pb) in the pot. 4. you can cut solder bars to smaller pieces to ease the melting/refill process 5. use liquid flux: No Clean will work, do not use water-soluble fluxes. 6. Safety first: fume extractor, exhaust fan, safety glass/goggles for operators, heat resistant gloves, warning signs, and location for the solder pot away from the human traffic (preferable).
