1) Viscosity measurement of the coating prior to spray, spraying and charting metal coupons for sprayed and cured thickness of the coating at various points of the conformal coat run

2) Yes, manual inspection

3) No, it wasn't able to inspect with the degree of scrutiny we needed for our process/coverage requirments

4) No, metal coupon and calipers is the most reliable (and cheapest) way to measure cured coating thickness, IMO

Tape test to check adhesion and multiple point thickness test - each board has 5 points per side documented for thickness testing & we measure pre & post coating thickness with an electronic meter. Also temp & humidty are also logged, and alarms go off if close to process limits. Coating is manually inspected under UV. We looked at machines, but was warned off by experts I trust implictly.

There is too much variation in the different Conformal Coating types and application requirements that you will get many different answers. Your controls will be tailored to the job requirements. My controls for parylene coating aerospace product is different from the silicone coating of class 1 product. Feel free to email me if you have specific questions on your specific methods.
