Solder Splash/Balls and Flux Splash/Balls | 9 December, 2020

My company has been having issues with a lot of solder balls, solder splash, and flux balls all over a specific board. Now this is one of the only companies that require us not to clean our boards after our work is finished but this is also causing a lot of reworks from a messy board. All of these issues are coming from hand soldered through hole components. We have tried different fluxes, different solders, lowering the soldering iron temperature but the issue still remains. Any ideas on how we can go about resolving this issue? Is it just poor workmanship or some kind of material issue?

I represent PROMATION USA and we have several solutions for solder wire perforation: Our QUICK 372B is a stand-alone drilling station. Our QUICK 371DI is a semi-automatic hand soldering station with perforation technology. Our QUICK 300A/B is a drilling and/or scoring unspool and respool solution; allowing for spools to be perforated and distributed across a factory floor. Our website is listed below and we would be delighted to discuss our many available solutions with you. In addition, I have included a short overview video listed on our YouTube Channel that demonstrates the process.

- We also offer solder wire preheat solutions.

One of the common causes of solder ballin is also outgassing from the boards have your tested the board for outgassing?

I haven't, that is a good idea, I was reading about the chance of that earlier but I was not sure. The best way to eliminate is to bake the board?

Also, solder splashes can be due to contamination, for example, on the terminals of components. In the past, had a problem with solder splashes on a seemingly standard SMD component. The reason was the incorrect nickel plating process of the component terminal. Drying of the components and board did not help in this case.

Hi, try a low spitting cored wire...something like ALMIT SR-LA cored wire...or SR-LA SUPER...it eliminates flux/solder spitting during soldering.
