PCB/PCBA deflection standard | 24 January, 2022

Hello,

we have a stiff board that goes to HLA, where some force is applied over the board to make it fit in. This force creates some deflection/bending of the PCBA and in result we see some functional failures. I wonder if there is any standard that explains how much mechanical force or bending angle can be applied over PCB/PCBA?

I'm not aware of any such requirement, just warp & twist. It's probably something that you need to define in your procurement spec.

Generally, a well-designed assembly should not require man-handling of the PCB to the point where it is deflecting like this. Is the housing too small? What kind of clearance do you have and is there anything you can do to alleviate the issue (closer routing, assembly aids)? I would dig into the entire process from start to finish and observe how the process is actually executed and determine where the failure is occurring (component, trace, other). If you can't solve the problem yourself, all this info can give you the ammo you need to go back and improve the design.

Thank you both,

it is not the good HLA design and this is why the deflection is needed to sit everything properly in the case. We did ask cust0mer(we are CM) to change it, I am just looking for a standard to support our claim.
