Panasonic CM Nozzle shifts LED's positions | 17 April, 2022

I am mounting 3535 Cree High-power leds with p&p machine. First nozzle picks up the led normally and then it's placed good but after 4-5 times nozzle picks up the led like at an angle. looks like it holds the led from the side edge of the dome. (nozzle is big enough to fit the dome in it)

Therefore when nozzle goes back to the tape and reel after mounting, LEDs position shiftr or it turns over although mounting time is very low. Can anybody suggest the solution?

If you're 100% certain you have the correct nozzle for this package you could check to see if your PnP machine has an option for "Auto Adjust Pickup Position" or something along those lines and try changing it (if it's currently on, try turning it off and vice versa).

Is it the CREE with the soft dome? We had to get specially made nozzles for our SAMSUNG machines to pick up cree LEDs correctly. They are basically rubber tipped. We bought from Count on Tools website.

I had the same question. We have custom nozzles made by Count on Tools. I believe we found urethane works the best for the silicon domed LEDs. Have you slowed the feed rate down on the feeder? Also adjust the top tape to the back slot on the feeder. This will pull the tape with the LED still under the slide. Also adjust the slide to be closer to the pick point so the LED can't bounce in the pocket.

Hi Chris. Thanks for sharing these details. We are working with Cree XP-G3 LED (3535). We bought urethane nozzle from CoT (recommendation from Cree), but it didn't solve problem of LED sticking to nozzle. Cleaning nozzle with isopropanol (other recommendation from Cree) didn't help either. We have occasional success with in-house made nozzle (plastic), but it is not a permanent solution. From your experience, did urethane nozzle completely solved problem with LED placement? Thanks.

Not completely. We end up increasing the blow off/vacuum break air pressure. The only issue with that is if we go too high, and a small part is close to the light it will blow it out of position. So on occasion there is a balancing act we have to do. We have also found that the lights we get are from either China or Malaysia. One of those manufacturers domes tend to be stickier than the others. I honestly don't remember which is which, but if I were to guess, the Malaysian ones are worse. The other thing we've found is if we are having no luck with adjusting mount/pick/speed/air settings, we change out the paste with new. Our lines run 24 hrs x 5 days, so the paste can get a tad dry if a line has a slow job on it, this helps quite a bit.

Indeed, stickiness of LED dome varies from batch to batch. We didn't have much success with adjusting pick&mount settings. Also, usage of other nozzle (recommendation from SMT manufacturer) didn't help. Usually, we have a good experience with similar LEDs (with dome) from other suppliers (e.g. Nichia). Feedbacks from Cree are mostly related to recommendation to use urethane nozzle.

Try adding blow after mount before head up if your machine lets you.

Make sure your placing the part into the solder paste as that will add some holding force as well. If your tips are spring loaded you can do some 0.5mm additional mounting height. If they are fixed nozzles and the head does not offer buffing I would bring it down to .2/.1 mm

Alex, I can tell you from experience it took a great deal of experimenting with settings when we first started running these. Our best course of action if the settings aren't making a difference, is the blow off. I've had it, let's say pretty high as frustration mounts. What is your part thickness set at? Take a measurement of the base only. I'm assuming your nozzles from Cot are the same as ours, that go over the dome to pick it up. Every LED we've run on our machines, all Panasonic's, we struggle when they switch lights.

Also, be sure that the board support is good. If you have any area of the board with less support, and it bounces a little when placing the LED, it may seem like it's randomly not placing correctly, and so any Z-depth or blow-off tweaking you do will seem like it's inconsistent.
