IPC Raw PCB Inspection | 12 January, 2023

I need to benchmark or sanity check our incoming inspection process in relation to IPC Class 3 electronics. I am looking for a contact with someone who assembles/builds IPC Class PCBAs, that i can sanity check some stuff with.

To start, our process basically says that we do 100% visual inspection of the boards.... and that's about it. There is a form that has some checkboxes about some packaging notes but there are pretty vague.

I am was reading through IPC-6012 (Rev D, I know its the current one and I am trying to get that purchased) in section 4 under QA Provisions, and to my knowledge we have functionally ignored that whole section. It makes me nervous to say the least. Does anyone here utilize any of that guidance in section 4 of IPC-6012?

Btw, we are an OEM doing various contracts (commercial or military). High mix, very low volume, and fast contract turns.

So, as I understand it, IPC6012 are performance criteria that your board shop should be using.

I think you'd want to be using IPC600 for acceptance criteria at incoming inspection. At least, that's what I always did in my CM days. And, since you're buying Class 3 product, I would require a CofC from the fab house, along with cross-section samples (most fab houses should already be sending these with class 3 boards).

Sierra Circuits has a good write up on the two specs here: https://www.protoexpress.com/blog/ipc-6012-ipc-600-standard-use/#:~:text=What%20is%20IPC%2D6012%3F,%2Dsided%3A%20With%2Fwithout%20PTHs

OP here Everything you have said makes sense. However, sanity check me on this. The one thing that IPC-A-600 does not discussion is inspection sampling or frequency, which is discussed in section 4 of IPC-6012.

Table 4-3 lists all these different characteristics, along with different AQLs for each. Are people actually using that, becuase then you have to split the lot into different sample amounts for each inspection criteria. That seems like a massive time hole, and a documentation nightmare. Any thoughts on the sampling and AQLs?

We currently do 100% inspection due to low quantity which technically is more but I would love to move to sampling. However, if it means following that table 4-3, wow.

Am I crazy?
