Silicone Coat + BGA masking

Silicone Coat + BGA masking | 17 May, 2023

Looking for advise (see subject).

I'm currently damming the gap between pcb and bga body to avoid coat underfill. Per IPC CC 830C "When a conformal coating is used to completely underfill such a device, the differences in CTE place a great deal of stress on the interconnect leads."

Would like to forgo damming since it's done manually and is process intensive.

I would like to use boots or a fixture, but I'm concerned about leeching due to bad seal (im using silicone). Does anyone have any tips and tricks?

From my previous experience with silicone, it tend to be need to spray with thick coating(s) and it's more watery. The boots doesn't work too well in those cases. Just a note, now I am no longer working with silicone. For conformal coating, best masking is important, but if you have tune the spray setting right, you can cut down some of the masking headaches too. My approach to the watery material issue would be try to play with pressure ratio; increase more air pressure and lower the fluid pressure (as dry as possible), doing so should helps.
