SM421 crash issue | 26 March, 2025

we have 3 SM421 in our production line. One of them has started showing an error while booting up. "Failed to Initialize visual code". I have tried swapping the hard disk image with a backup image however once I load a program and move onto finish and then download I get a popup saying " error with windows, need to shutdown and reboot your system". Once I click ok the system shuts down and then it goes back to the initial error. The entire cycle keeps on repeating even after trying different programs. Can someone please advice how do I get out of this predicament. I have a feeling it could be related to the Samsung boot up s/w

I am not familiar with that specific error, but I have 5 Samsung SM machines, so I can offer a little guidance.

Are you running from TOLP or Stand-alone? Are your programs on the machine hardrive or a separate server? Is your Parts Library on the machine drive or separate server?

I create programs using TOLP and then load them on the machine using USB stick. The programs on the machine are stored on the machine hard drive. we dont have a separate server. I have managed to start the m/c using an image of previous known good config however I cant switch off the m/c as its goes back to acting erratic once its switched back on. At the end of the day the m/c is left on and is functioning normally but I know its not a permanent solution.

When you say using an image of previous known good, do you mean an image of the hard drive? Our machines have a partitioned drive C: and D:. When they were installed, the tech saved a copy of the SmartSM folder onto the D drive as SmartSM-old or something similar. Assuming yours also has this, have you tried using that? Basically, take your current SmartSM folder, and rename it, then COPY the one that was saved as -old, and paste it in to the C: and rename it just SmartSM, then restart the machine. If it works, you'll have to go through the ANC screen a correct the nozzle locations, as they will come in as whatever they were when it was saved as a back up.

I did exactly what you had suggested and then a new error msg popped up saying that an empty document cold not be created so I copied the smart SM folder from another SM421. I opened the smartSM folder alongside the one from another m/c to check what was missing. I somehow manage to copy the contents from one folder to another and got the m/c going however I cannot shutdown the m/c now. If I do so the m/c goes back to the visual error popup

Oh wow. I recall the "failed to create empty document" error. If I recall, that had to do with the ini file not having the correct path to the library/ database. So possibly, the back up was saved when the path was different. Find the smartsm ini file in the one you changed and bring it over. Or just compare the two and see what's different.

That is exactly what I thought as well. I copied the SmartSM s/w from another m/c and loaded it on the problematic machine to get it going. The "empty document error" had disappeared however it went back to the visual format error and the m/c would prompt to be shut down again. This is the reason I believe it has something to do with ini s/w
