BGA Rework

Does anyone have thoughts on BGA rework. We now use the OK BGA 3000 and now am considering an Infrared machine. Any thoughts?

IR is a throwback to the good old days (10+ years ago) as it likes dark surfaces/objects and heats them readily. It "reflects" off shiney surfaces rendering heat transfer to a minimum. Simulating convection hot air reflow profiles is not possible during rework, but it is what we try to emulate to effect the highest quality.

I have similar concerns with IR reflecting away from some surfaces and not others. Some companies say they can heat BGA solder joints with IR wavelengths that are not absorbed by the plastic mold compound. If anyone has experience with this I would like to hear about it. Regards.
