Registration to be Optional, To Earl, Steve, Scott, Bob, Brian, and All

Dear Earl, Steve, Scott, Bob, Brian, and All,

We want to thank you for starting or participating in the dialog and for your continued input, both technical and site related.

Our vision at SMTnet is to create the most effective �One Click� communication among vendors and users of products, services, information, and solutions. We envision complete transparency of vendors (i.e., a user should be able to find a vendor instantly), while fully protecting the anonymity of users (i.e., it is up to you to let any vendors or users reach you). The registration, both for vendors and users, has been designed to accomplish this vision. Obviously, we have not been able to communicate this model convincingly to all of you. And we are not interested in imposing our philosophy on you. Instead, through the ongoing dialog, we are confident that over time you will not only agree with our vision, but also help us refine our model.

We would like to reiterate what we see as benefits of the now optional registration to you and the SMTnet Community. We continue to invite your comments regarding their importance and alternative ways of achieving the same:

1. To maintain the quality of the SMT Forum without monitoring it. We do not intend to monitor the quality of the postings 24 hours a day. We do not want to delay any postings by reviewing and editing messages. If a person is registered, he or she is more likely to be aware of the rules and policies of the site and to act accordingly. In addition, we can reach a registered user to address any inappropriate postings directly if we need to.

2. Get your SMTnet.com email address to prevent receiving unsolicited e-mail. Our system will prevent third parties from mass e-mailing to your SMTnet mailbox. SMTnet will only email you information with your prior consent. The information we email you will take two possible forms: the regular SMT Express Newsletter and occasional third party new product announcement. The SMT Express will contain site updates, featured articles, and limited vendor advertising.

3. Set up your SMTneter Profile to share with other SMTneters. This is the sole purpose of the optional professional and personal interest information.

4. To make posting easy: your name and SMTnet email address is pre-filled to save your typing time and avoid errors.

5. To personalize your SMTnet experience. The My SMTnet is currently under development. It will allow registered users to customize the type of contents offered by SMTnet and the layout of page.

I think the optional registration is a great idea, strange as this sound's some companies - mine being 1 are not happy about it's engineer's voicing thing's on forum's. Which is a bit backward to say the least scared in case we give the 'enemy' a hand guess their still in the dark ages in the ivory towers!

anyway's just wanted to say I think it's a good idea...maybe the moonman will reconsider his untimely exit ---come on back moonman!

Thank you very much for allowing the freedom of choice on the registration issue. Although I think I will realize a personal benefit of registration in the filtering of sales calls and spam, I can understand the logic for resisting registration. Quite often I happen upon a website in quest of a single tidbit of info, but it requires registration so I just blow the thing off. Registration being optional will welcome many occaisional visitors who could end up being one of "us."

And it will also welcome back those who choose not to register like Earl. This is a great compromise. Thank you for your understanding, Cunli.
