Y2K | 3 February, 1999

Have any of you tested or plan to test your machines for Y2K compliance. I would be interested in what you did or what you plan to do. Which machines? What parameters?

It seems that it could be a career limiting move to test without getting management buyin. On the other hand I'm hearing that our software folks are finding some of our CAM software did not test compliant even though the vendor WEB sites declared it to be so.

On the other hand I'm hearing that our software folks are finding some of our CAM software did not test compliant even though the vendor WEB sites declared it to be so. | I tested my reflow ovens, screen printers, and pick and place equipment. My test method was to have my IS department run the Y2K test software that they had. All my machines failed this test. Call the vendor for information about Y2K. Vendors all told me that even though some machines were not 100% compliant, no ill effects would occur. I then, at the request of our ever worrisome person in charge of Y2K, went in and switched the BIOs to Dec 31,1999 23:59 and waited for the worst. Kind of risky but no big explosions.

What did I find out?

One printer was compliant keeping date and time even on leap year. This was accomplished using a Y2K software upgrade.

Two refow ovens advanced a day due to leap year. Even though BIOs rolled back to 1985, software kept date as 2/4/00. Not sure how that works? Will have to adjust date at times of leap year.

Three different pick and place machines advanced a day due to leap year. BIOS rolled back to 1900. Software logs date correctly except for leap years.

I had no equipment failures just as the equipment manufactures told me. Although, the equipment is not 100% Y2K compliant.

Good luck,

Chris G.

Thanks for all of this good info. I know this is a bit pushy but you mentioned that your IS Dept has some Y2K test software. Would it be possible for me to get a copy or can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.
