0402 pick problems

0402 pick problems | 16 November, 2000

Howdy Y'all,

I have seen a problem lately with getting the 0402 parts out of the tape and onto a PCB. We are using Universal HSPs with 8 X 2mm feeders in good condition. The components are manufactured by Rohm. The tape and components appear to be in spec dimensionally. Universal has looked at the machines along with our techs. We have double checked everything including humidity and temperature. Still, we have some problems. I have looked in the archives and found nothing directly related. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? Is it possible that the tape adhesive on the underside of the paper tape is causing this?

Thanks in advance!

Kris

We've not seen "pick problems". We've seen "release after pick problems" caused by adhesive on components, recently.

Could be the came thing, though.

Kris,

I gather from your description that the component can not be picked consistently. Meaning that the machine can place the component. How does the component place? Is the placement text book? Take a good look to see if the component isn't being dropped into a good position Or placed with too much force. With that in mind, I was thinking the Z axis servo controller is going bad(Some motors hic-up (real good too..before giving yield to death) or possibly the sensor and or pinched wires will cause a good case of undesired intermittent boo boos. ( VAC lines can be intermittent as well)

Some more information is needed. Is there a machine error indicating a mispick? Or a vision error Component missing? I am not as familiar with UIC machines as I am with Siemens but here is my $.02 anyway. Try shimming the feeder under the pick up position.

I've seen problems where the component was slightly thicker than the tape and popped out of the pocket upon transport. Is the component still in the pocket after mispick? Do you have access to a high speed camera or could rent one for a day?

Dave,

That's exactly what we are seeing. There is a trail of components leading away from the pick point, all of which are 0402 parts. I can remove the feeder from the machine, advance a few parts into view, turn over the feeder and only half will fall out without tapping on the feeder. Under a microscope, the part completely covers the opening in the nozzle, and vacuum at the nozzles is well within spec. I've been hesitant to point the finger at the component manufacturer, but I'm running out of other avenues. Actually, I feel better that other people may be having a similar issue (not that I'm a sadist, or anything)... We've been placing these parts for years, and just now we are having a problem. I guess my next step is with the part manufacturer. Let me know if anyone has gone to the mat with the parts guys on this issue?

Thanks again,

Kris

Sounds like "place" problem doenit?

As best as I can tell [ever notice how the trail get fuzzy pretty fast, when someone starts asking probing questions], we received someone caps manufactured by someone other than Rolm through a distributor. The parts had an "old" date code. The manufanufacturer would not accept responsibility for the parts, because of a "checkered history." We force fed them to the distributor [probably only to be faught about in a later life}.

Hi, Kris You mean you have checked the tape&component demension, all in spec, But could you tell me the spec of the tape cave size,I mean how about the gap between the cave and component? Do you have such spec.for 0402 Component? Please inform us if you know. Thanks a lot!

Kris,

Get that high speed camera in there. You have to find out what is happening after the pick point. Also just to throw in another possibility into your cause list. How about static electricty? It can effect such small components.

hi kris well 0.02 cents south african money is a lot less. but anyway we have a customer with 3 lines all lines are the same equipment and we have had major problems with 0402s .on some manf reels .as a test we moved one reel around and the problem moved.we as a third party asked the comp manf what was going on and found if the stock was older than 8 months and not stored properly .our customers store gets very hot the tape becomes fury and if its in paper the paper swells up and bingo a pile of comp around pick up we have tested this on chipshooters and good old pick/place and get the same results.
