TCP (tape carrer package?)

Does anyone know what a TCP is? What type of process is required for assembly, what type of equipment?

Any help or resources on the subject would be greatly appreciated..

TCP, or tape carrier package is the same as TAB, or tape automated bonding package. It's a film of polyimide with the leads etched on laminated copper foil. The inner leads are bonded to the die, the tape is usually singulated, and the individual parts are shipped in plastic carriers.

For PWA assembly, the device's leads are trimmed and formed by a die set attached to the assembly machine's feeder. The part is then placed on the board that has solder bumps and reflowed with a hot bar pressing on the leads. The pitch is usually 8 to 10 mils.

TCP requires a dedicated machine. Universal made the best TAB (or TCP) bonder. I don't think they manufacture them as new anymore, but they are available used.

TCP was intel's name for the TAB package. When they decided to use the package for portable peentium applications, they changed the name (I assume to remove some of the taboo associated with false starts on the TAB package)
