Not picking from MTU | 9 November, 1998

Here is a good one for ya. Our IP3's MTU will not pick QFP240's out of cavities, 10, 12, 13, 15. This is a 3X8 tray. The listed cavities are also the closed cavities that are used for tray eject. There is plenty of vaccum, the nozzle comes down far enough, in fact the vaccum sensor light even comes on when it comes down over these particular parts. All other cavities pick fine. I have tried everything I can think of. This seems to defiy the laws of physics. Please help.. thanks Larry J

At least I can imagine what happens and it may solve your problem. If the vacuum is already turned on above the component there will be an airstream above and around the component. This might even suck the air out of the cavity, which supports the component body. Because the surface of the frame in the cavity is larger than the nozzle surface, the vacuum force holding the component down is stronger than the vacuum force of the nozzle. I don't know the specifics of the IP III and what triggers the vacuum to be turned on. If it is Z-height related you may want to enter a thinner component or tray.

Larry, We place QFP240's all the time with our 2 IP-3's. If you provide your e-mail or fax number, I can send you the PD that we use for our QFP's. Steve

Steve, The PD isn't the problem. The QFP240's place fine. It is just that dont pick from cavities 10, 12, 13, and 15. When the sub-robot picks from the other cavities, they place fine. The robot comes down over the above listed cavities, but doesn't come up with the part. The vaccum sensore light even comes on as if vaccum has been made. We place those QFP's on other IP3's in the plant. Using the same PD on other lines. Just that this IP has the problem. Thanks....

Larry,

We once had a problem in which the IPIII would pick on one area of the tray and not on another. It turned out to be the vacuum hose. There was a small crack/cut in the hose, and when the robot (and attached hose) was in a particular position, the loss of vacuum was enough to prevent pick up. Hope this helps.

The part positions you describe (10,12,13,15) are the rear half of the tray (when viewed from IP3 front). If the plates are not level then the SZ height will be inconsistent. Also, is it possible the parts are being sucked up to meet the nozzle? Good luck!
