Big SMEMA Troubles :-(

Big SMEMA Troubles :-( | 3 November, 1998

SMTnetters:

My UIC conveyors aren't working with my:

  • Omniflow 7 Reflow (Mfg 1/95)
  • Dek 265 GS
  • Philips CSM

What can I do? Does anyone have experience with connecting UIC or other conveyors to the above equipment? On the reflow I jumped terminals 1-3 at the P12 connector on Board 01. We have board width trouble there. The Dek is another mystery and we haven't even looked at the CSM (we expect the worst). One day lost due to SMEMA problem. Aaah!

Please post a message, or if you prefer, please e-mail.
Thank you in advance.

Check to see if your SMEMA interface is software selectable (smema1,2, fuji, siemens). Sometimes the protocalls conflict between machines. You may have to experiment.

2. Break out your schematics. In order to transfer a PCB downstream. The downstream machine must have contact closure. This is called "not busy" You can verify your PCB sensors / smema interface is working if the PCB logic condition is met (conveyor sensor flagged upstream) . The contact pair downstream should close (assuming it is available).

3. To transfer that PCB out of a machine it reads an "available " signal in the form of contact closure. This of course tells the next downstrream machine a PCB is available. If the downstream machine has a "not busy" contact closure, the PCB travels downstream These two signals "busy" and "available" are all that is necessary to transfer PCB's.

4 you can fool your machines by jumpering the pins which would normally go to relay contact pairs (I think pins 1,2 and 3,4 on standard smema connectors -- however verify this with your schematics BEFORE jumpering.

If you have any questions call me at 503 672-4388 and I can help further. I have interfaced a host of machines with (and without) the smema protocal. Enjoy Phillip Hunter

I assume that you're dealing w/ Universal's SMPI connectors (and possibly their cables too).

We've fabricated "conversion boxes" to accomplish what you're trying to do. These boxes have a female SMPI plug on one side, a female SMEMA plug on the opposite side, and wiring+relay in the middle. The wiring is different depending on whether the upstream device is SMPI or SMEMA. I can fax the schematics to you. Let me know if you're interested.

Alternatively, Universal sells their own boxes. I'm not sure what their PNs are. They used to cost...$400 each?

I'd like that fax, if you're still willing to send it. | 5 November, 1998

MA: my internet e-mail isn't working at the moment, but I'd really love to see the conversion you created. My fax is 716-256-0792. Do you have a Dek printer or Omniflow oven?

Many thanks to you.
