Looking for Procedures for SMT repair | 18 June, 1998

I am looking for a quickly obtainable procedure on the repair of SMT boards. I am particularly interested in discrete components, such as capacitors and resistors. I need to know the importance of pre-heating the board and components. What is a good way to detect damage due to improper handling at repair? I am concerned about MTBF on parts that have been improperly handled. Is there any good books that are easily obtainable on the subject? Can anybody help me, please?

Bill: Here are two sources to help you. Dave F 1. ANSI / IPC-R-700. "Suggested Guidelines For Modification, Rework, and Repair ..." It's sort of a bible. IPC's number is 708-677-2850 2. "Circuit Repair Guidebook" can be downloaded from www.circuitnet.com. It runs on Abobe. I think they still send it to you on CD. Call 978.374.5000.

You can go to our web site and clik on our resources page. There are links to sites that will have information on this subject. In california there is also a bookstore called Computer Literacy. They have a good stock on many technical books for electronic manufacturing.
