Question on experience

The company I work for has only 1 SMT line all FUJI 89 vintage, My expierience with the Industry started with this line when it was brought into the company 2 years ago, from day one I've been the Process tech for the line and have learned a great deal. My question is, are there any places that an individual can go to broaden their experience? Until the company actually starts getting more advanced equipment, or more advanced product to run, I'm stuck at the knowledge level I'm at now. any help would be very much appreciated, and yes I do pick up every book I can on the subject. -Ben

And all of them were great suggestions from a corporate stand point, I'm looking to broden more of my personal knowledge, to make myself more marketable. You brought up the SMTA which would be a great asset IF they had chapter meetings in Spokane, WA...the closest one to us is in Seattle. do you know of any other sources I could go to find items of interest in my general vicinity. Without being able to get the company to fund any ventures I need to stay in my area of living. Someday I'll be able to travel to diffent conventions like NEPCOn and such...but right now at 20K a year it's an impossibility. ACK! sorry for the sob story thanks for the advice -Ben

Ben: I'm sorry I mis-understood the meaning of the $20k that you spoke of in your SMTNet posting. Let's try this: Here in Pennsylvania, the state legislature subsidizes training that employers provide. So here, the employer pays half and the state pays half. Is there a similar program out in Washington? Dave F

Is there a similar program out in Washington? | Dave F Well, we kind of do, it's called a RIF. the way it works is, you get laid off for two years and live off of approx 70% unemployment while the company pays for you to go to school to "learn another trade" and after that if there are openings they hire you back into another better position. the other option is Schooling paid While working, the only problem with these two situations is that they have to be College courses. not training seminars or the like. -Ben
