Industry benchmark ppm number | 25 April, 1998

Is there an industry standard in calculating SMT process PPM level for benchmarking purpose ? What are the industry benchmark ppm number for some of the defects like solder short for 20-mil QFP, tomstone problem for 0603 components etc....

Wouldn't it be nice!!! Each engineer must calculate his/her statistical answer based upon acceptance criteria first. Then, each must ensure all processes are manageable from design through test and customer acceptance. I mean, what else could we want as those involved assuring quality through process (not results) management? Just look at IPC's classes I through III. What spec do you need to meet? What are you trying to do - with what equipment, tools, facilities, resources (as money, marketing, sales, personnel, training, procedures, quality system, etc.) All this is what sets us apart from one another. Do the math. Respectfully, Earl Moon
