Cleaning Asm. After using noclean flux | 18 March, 1998

Is there anyone out there required by their customer to clean the finget tab contacts even after using noclean paste? We have been asked to clean even though we don't have any flux residue on the contacts. Any ideas? Mike

Yes and often. People still are concerned how clean is clean. So how clean is it? Concurrency needs to apply all across the board from no clean suppliers, to cleaning process capabilities, to industry, to customers and designers. Industry has many specifications and they need to apply - again - all across the board. What was the question again? It doesn't end.

I've had a customer want me to clean because he didn't like the appearance of the residue around the joints. I might add that he specified no-clean over water soluable. My response was no-clean means no-clean otherwise I'll go back to WS. I also stated that cleaning in California was not as easy as elsewhere. I may have lost this customer but I value my employees health more. I have not had specific instruction to clean finger tabs though, on any product. It's a funny business... Scott

It is funny and very seriously so. We do have qualitative and quantitave cleanliness acceptance criteria for many requirements. However, because of past performance and some deleterious affects, paranoia runs deep with some. I always drag along a household dishwasher for just some occassions. Still, I believe we must have more involvement between solder paste suppliers and those involved in having to clean what might be left - either as visual effects or as serious contaminates.

How's MSAI? We use a solution called Armor Clean to remove no-clean flux from pcbs after which we send through an aqueous cleaner. The armor clean prevents the boards from turning white when hitting the cleaner.......Marty (former MSAI'r)
