College can't make SMT PCB's | 11 December, 2001

I have run into a problem when trying to produce a SMT PCB at college. Namely they don't have any equipment for such a 'modern' process.

The part I need to use is JST 21FLZ-SM1-TB. Is there any prototyping equipment I could acquire which would allow me to connect to this part, or possibly an equivalent part which can be connected to a PCB the old fashioned way? Any help at all would be appreciated

Please help as I am desperate

Can you be a little more specific? The part description doesn't sound familiar. Rob

This may be the part that Dave's talking about http://www.bce.it/Jst/eflz.pdf

Why can't people use good ol' Cannon circular connectors.

Ah, a desperate one. The kind we prey upon, mmm

Several points are: * There are ample sources of information on the net that describe the fabrication of prototype boards. * Search the fine SMTnet archives for additional information. For instance: http://www.smtnet.com//forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&CFApp=1&Thread_ID=4424&#Message17229&

Aw, dont get yourself wrapped around equipment for such a 'modern' process axial. Just glue the parts upside down on a board and solder hard wire jumpers between the leads. Only don't forget to remember that the pin numbering sequence changes from the data sheet when the parts are upside down.

"Modern"??? Depending on who you talk with [ http://www.smtnet.com/Forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&CFApp=1&Thread_ID=4690&mc=7 ], SMT was started: * In 1998 by the Japanese after watching "B" movies staring one or another of the Belushi brothers. * Brits in 1960 after the European Free Trade Association came into being and the original signatories to the 1957 Treaty of Rome (the EEC, later the EU) saw EFTA as a threat to the future of European unity.

What happened to good ol' 30 ga. hook up wire?

I used to be a whiz with a wire wrap gun. I've even hand soldered wires to a 240 pin QFP (the Engineer was too cheap to buy a $80 socket).

Just what are they teaching in these edifices of matriculation these days?

and does a "B" movie stand for Belushi (John)?

Dave- Have I got the protype machine for you! Contact me off line at cdriscoll@manncorp.com

Also, You gots-ta have a local assembler near you to help with this. What college are you attending? I know for a fact ACI in Philadelphia have assisted many colleges (U of Delaware, Drexel,Temple.....) with intro to SMT and proto builds. If you could tell me what school you are at I can locate a facility to assist you.

Oh GOD! | 13 December, 2001

The componant details can be found at: http://www.jst-mfg.com/pdfE/eFLZ.pdf its the 21 pin variety I need. I'm sorry but anyone suggesting that I manually do !anything! with this componant has got perfect 20/20 vision along with the soldiering skills of zeus :-) I can hardly see the pins there so small!

Did I mention that my college is so underfunded that we are using Orcad From October 26 1987. Bearing this in mind should I start again and produce a flasing LED for my degree project?

See. That's the connector that I thought it was.

No, don't change your project!!! It sounds perfect. This will be a wonderful "learning experience" for you.

You should get yourself a magnifying glass, some solder, and a soldering iron and go to IT!!! At the end, you will knowingly and solemnly pledge never to commit these things on a human again. And if you follow through with your pledge, we production types might even begrudgingly like you [possibly even acknowledging your existance], instead of cursing you and your progeny like we do when feeble minded designers cast their abominations on us.

Although, the blinkidee led thing sounds nice. Can you figure-out how to make things on my hoola girl tie go on and off?

NO!!!! NO!!!! NO!!!! Stop being such a woose, hoist-up your skirt and get back in there and make us all proud of you!!! I want to see bandaids and smell burnt flesh. Git to it, boyee.

Has anyone ever said you sound like a college lecturer? "Learning Experience" indeed, thats such a sadistic suggestion.

No really though thanks for the inspiration. I WILL try!

...and what you advise if this guy ends up with "lumpy" joints? Take another hit from his beer bong? If he does get your hoola girl tie to blinka blink at strategic places, would we be seeing them soon at a Target nearby?
