I am looking for some equipment with a fairly undemanding capability. I would appreciate pointers to potential suppliers.

Dispense size 0603 chips only, speed can be as low as 60 chips per minute. Only one type of component (ie one reel) is loaded.

The only difficulty is that the equipment needs be be astride or above a "conveyor belt" that carries panels up to 400mm wide and 1.5M long. (Yes I know that is a big PCB. But it is rather special as it is maded from glass). In effect the glass panel is slid on a precision bed under a chip dispense head. Through-put need not be very high.

(We can supply the conveyor as it supports other work stations.)

The "chip dispenser" can be semi-automatic. Picking up the fiducials can be manual. The main crteria is that precision needs to be adequate for 0603.

If anybody knows of equipment that can be adapted to fit on this "process line" please email.

You may not find a supplier with an "out of box" solution.

But you might be able to jury-rig something without too much pain and cost. Try this: * Buy a fairly brainless feeder [like an old quad feeder] from an used equipment supplier / broker [search the fine SMTnet Archives for names] * Work with the suppliers mentioned in a thread [within the past week or so,on the main page for the forum] on dispensers to program the head to to the pick & place operation. The stretched reach you're talking about should narrow the suppliers pretty quickly.

To Dave F.

Thanks for your comments. I should point out that I am not well versed in SMT, I am more of a thick film and chip man. However I will look into your leads. I will try and find out more about the Quad equipment. I am very wary in getting locked into truly obsolete equipment because of the reliability and maintenance issues. Do you think the Quad equipment you have in mind could be OK in this respect?

I will try searching on "Quad feeder" to see what this turns up.

Dave is right. There is no machine on the market which can handle a 1.5 m long "board". If you or someone else will have to tinker with a custom made machine, it will be less expensive to use a used machine ( I could be offering some used Siemens machines ). However, the travel range of the placement head is about 600 mm X 720 mm. In order to place parts on a 1500 mm long board it will have to stop and populate in the conveyor at least three times. For every section there will be one different program required with individual fiducials. By the time the programs are downloaded, board conveyed and fiducials recognized, the placement rate may be down there, where you required it for this job. Note, the sensors on the conveyors should be ultra sonic, optical sensors may convey your board onto the shop floor.
