Marcos- BGA's and soldering manually is difficult. Typically soldering BGAs requires reflow just as a reflow oven does, so I recommend a rework station.

Go to http://www.empf.org/html/empfset.htm and download Jan 2002, Dec 2001, Sep 2001, Aug 2001, March 2001 Empfasis articles. These articles will help you get a better understanding of BGAs. I can also provide you with some technical articles as well, just email me at : Cdriscoll@manncorp.com

A word of preference- 1)I prefer Convection or Jet convection type of reflow. IR is good for over all heating balance (pre heat)of PCB board temp but I am not a big fan of direct IR for soldering. 2) I like the heated vacuum site preparation opposed to the Solder wik and Iron method.

Please contact me off line for my product recommendations.

Best regards, Cal

How many components you have to rework?, how's the design (complexity) of the PCB?, what type of BGA are you looking at?,... well, many other questions are to be asked and then answered. Some simple steps... but this is a totally uncontrolled process so take with a huge grain of pepper: 1) Take your BGA off your PCB by heating the component locally with a heat-gun. Needless to say, this is completely uncontrolled and undesired process. 2) Clean the pads with a wick, try to end up with as little residue as you dream of (for these steps, use the most experienced rework operator on the floor) 3) Apply paste with the help of a mini stencil, either on the pads or on the BGA balls 4) Re-solder the component using a rework station or a small oven capable of running reflow-like profiles. Well, this is in short a process to replace BGA's, which I would never use in mass production, or in a serious production environment (except steps 2 and 3 :-) ). If it is of any help for you, drop an email and we'll further debate over the subject... Meanwhile, good luck. LJ liviu@topengineering.com

Smtneter have talked about this in previous threads. Search the fine SMTnet Archives. I recall reference to some articles in the SMTnet Newsletter by the dear departed Earl "Give 'em the moon" Moon. Check it aut.

Hi Marcos,

If you need more information, I have a couple of books introducing and reworking BGA's. Details can be found at:- www.abtech-europe.com/smt/publications/prrsfpb.

Hi Barry,

didnt get very useful information regarding the problem of BGA rework with your link. Are you sure you gave adequate technical advice ?

Hope youre not only trying to sell books.

Gentlmen,

Thanks for the information. I am sure that I have some sources to star to study now!. Acctualy the volume of rework is not so much, but as we perform repairing in electronic baords, we try to work properly even in few repairing. Thanks again! Marcos
