How to reworking BGA

Marcos- BGA's and soldering manually is difficult. Typically soldering BGAs requires reflow just as a reflow oven does, so I recommend a rework station.

A word of preference- 1)I prefer Convection or Jet convection type of reflow. IR is good for over all heating balance (pre heat)of PCB board temp but I am not a big fan of direct IR for soldering. 2) I like the heated vacuum site preparation opposed to the Solder wik and Iron method.

How many components you have to rework?, how's the design (complexity) of the PCB?, what type of BGA are you looking at?,... well, many other questions are to be asked and then answered. Some simple steps... but this is a totally uncontrolled process so take with a huge grain of pepper: 1) Take your BGA off your PCB by heating the component locally with a heat-gun. Needless to say, this is completely uncontrolled and undesired process. 2) Clean the pads with a wick, try to end up with as little residue as you dream of (for these steps, use the most experienced rework operator on the floor) 3) Apply paste with the help of a mini stencil, either on the pads or on the BGA balls 4) Re-solder the component using a rework station or a small oven capable of running reflow-like profiles. Well, this is in short a process to replace BGA's, which I would never use in mass production, or in a serious production environment (except steps 2 and 3 :-) ).
