Looking for data on hand placed production component? | 6 March, 2002

Hello, Does any one as a database regarding component assemble by hand on a PCB. More accuratelly how much time (per sec) does it take to bend leads on a component(res), time to insert the component by hand, time to solder by hand. Any time base data would be very appreciated.

We would benchmark our times with the most experienced operator and them boost the time by 1/3. Example: If it takes Mary 3sec to insert the component, 3 secs to clinch and cut the leads (it is not advised to cut the leads after soldering), and 8 secs to solder the component (4 secs per hole-this can be reduced depending on the operators proficiency) the over all time you could expect would be 18.67 sec per component. This is just an example. Obviously 1/8 watt resistors solder faster than 1 watt. Assemblies with more components could affect this time.

We also would Pre Prep our leads on through hole components before assembly (this was automated with a lead forming machine)

Dunno if this is the perfect way but it worked for us.

As an alternative, consider: * Asking your operators. * Having your operators keep logs and checking them with hands-on time studies.

I agree with Dave.

The only reliable way is to perform a time study using a watch with decimal minutes. Setup the study using an average rated operator and time 10 component insertions (from pick up to hands off), time 10 component soldering operations and 10 cropping operations. Take the average and then add 10-12% as a relaxation allowance. It all depends how far you want to go with this, because the other steps include "rating" all of your operators etc; You may find in your environment that the overhead to maintain this is too much.
