Hi Guys,

We are using two types of support Jigs for our PCB boards, during the paste printing, chip shooter, and IC mounting.

The two types of support Jigs are : 1) "self-fabricated" aluminium support Blocks 2) "off shelf purchased" support Pins

The function of either Block/Pin, is to provide bottom support for the PCB, as it is being paste printed or chip/IC mounted.

the support Pins are off shelf purchases and come with lever activated magnetized ability to "lock" the Support Pins in the designated locations on the machine tables.

For mass production Lot runs, we use dedicated support Blocks for each model type. the support Blocks are "lock" into allocated locations on the machine tables, using double side tapes. the problem is that this requires longer setup times (human trial and error placement) that also leaves tape residue after Block removal (for model conversions). We are thinking of getting magnetized support blocks, similar to lever activation liken to the support Pins concept. The support Block is standardized into (150mm x 140mm x 70mm) working dimensions.

Anyone have working knowledge whether this magnetized support Block is feasible, based on working dimensions? any concerns of magnetized affecting the machine tables, and generating electro-magnetic fields over 24hr/7days of use? (meantime we are waiting for machine maker opinion).

I dunno...seems like this simple question of getting magnetized support Blocks is a hot topic of debate...appreciate any external(like SMTnet) sources of practical opinions regarding this topic.

thanks in advance to anyone who can share their valuble experience and "laws of physics" knowledge, with us all.

Cheers!

Hi,

Don't know if some holes can be drilled to yur machine table, if so, yu can make the support with at least 2 pin and plug into the table, better to use aluminium support, easier to CNC. Hope this help

thanks for the opinion,

dun think we want to drill the machine tables, due to SMT line config : 1) printer, 1unit machine 2) chip shooters, 3 units machine 3) IC mounter, 1 unit machine

plus the potential void of machine warranty by the drilling, isn't going to make our operations director too happy.

Apart from Al being easier to CNC, what about electro-magnetic field buildup over time? is it a valid concern?

Ovation Products (devision of Airline Hydraulics) makes a fixture just for Screen printing and PNP machines. This product is called grid lock. It's tooling that is air actuated and conforms to the bottom side of your PCB with gentle (gentle enough not to damage tissue paper)pressure.

Here is a snip from their website: "The Grid-Lok fully automatic tooling system is a modular system, currently designed to fit several variants of printing and placment machines. Each magnetic base module is easily spaced for the product being run. Grid-Lok tooling enables electronics manufacturers to have custom support fixtures for each of their products at the touch of a button."

Ovation Website is http://www.ovationproducts.net. You can contact Charles Moncavage at (610) 758 9400 x2505 , or at engineering@ovationproducts.net

You may Tell Charles that Cal Driscoll passed this information on.

So does it mean Magnetized Blocks, are not going to be a concern for magnetized machine tables? or are not going to generate electro-magnetic fields?

can anyone please help unravel this pop-quiz question? (keeping in mind the support block has rather large dimensional size)

I have used magnetic supports for some time on our printers and have never had any issue with them. They are in the machine 24/7. The best support would be a solid base screwed in and with vacuum, but if you don't want to drill then use the magnetic supports.
