We are in the process of considering purchase of an AOI. Before doing so I would like to know if someone, with experience using an AOI in production, can share pros and/or cons. We are looking seriously at the Photon Dynamics 7550 (Previously CR Technology). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

I use to work in C & D Technologies (www.cdtechno.com) in Tucson, AZ as a Manufacturing Engineer. I was in charge of trainig employees on how to use the AOI system. It is very easy to use and maintain. The guys from CR Technology from Aliso Viejo, CA, are very experienced and always willing to help you out when problems are presented (if they are presented). The equipment they have is very useful. It reduced rework in our facility in a great porcentage. As far as I know the equipment was going for 150,000 dollars and considering the befenits the price is right. If you need to know more contact Mike Denny for more information. I posted a similar question a few months ago. Basically, I asked: "Can anyone who is NOT a salesman for an OI company, provide an objective argument for purchasing these very expensive systems." Well folks, not surprisingly, no one has posted a response in defense of AOI. Sure, it's better than human inspection. But, shouldn't we concentrate on PROCESS and prevention instead of detection? The ROI just isn't there. Kinda reminds me of the nitrogen frenzy of a few years back... Save your money. Fix your processes, maintain your controls. Build boards! It ain't rocket science.

I'm sure if it was as simple as that, the AOI technology wouldn't exist. It does however so there must be a need out there for it. Perhaps companies have taken your advice of "save money" to a level that now requires excessive detection controls to be implemented. Not enough money spent hiring good qualified and skilled production people will get you to the point of needing an AOI system rather quickly I would imagine.

First of all are you looking for a inline or a table top unit.

We paid 50k for a Testronics unit and it does ok but I feel like others and that is if you have the inspection & controls in place you should be able to build quality boards by controlling the process.

We only used the AOI unit on the very dense boards we build. The low end table top units seem to take allot of time to inspect a board and sometimes become bottle necks in the production flow.

Here are a few key points when concidering AOI.

Programming and how easy is it.

Also, I am not a big fan of gold board AOI. There are other ways (neural networking to name one)that are much more efficient.

Can the system identify Characters?

can the system differentiate between colors?

is laser coplanarity an option.
