AOI vs AXI

AOI vs AXI | 6 June, 2002

Hi.

I'm checkin up needs for AOI or AXI in our SMT lines, and advantages and weak points between AOI and AXI (=automatical x-ray inspection). Our case is high mix low volume production 24h in 5 days of a week, so there are no online time to spend programing and re-programing the machines, and that is a main problem with AOIs, my opinion.

I want to get rid of operator inspecting after rewlow pcbs (and to put those operators to do something with effect on the income), and let the machines do the inspection. I'm considering to put the AOI or AXI machine after the reflow. Basicly I want to inspect is there joint or not, is there component or not, solder balling and short cuts. Polarity and stuff like that I'll do whit FAI and during the production with sample inspection.

Q:

1. Does anyone have a experiences from AXI machines? 2. Advantages and disadvantages between AOI and AXI? 3. X-ray inspection, and x-ray basicly, are unfamiliar technique to me, so can anyone recommend some websites or books to get familiar whit that?

Cheers,

-Sam-

Sam : Hi,

goto "www.yahoo.com",

under yahoo search option and literal type the following sentence:

"AXI" and "AOI" and "Agilent"

click "go" button, search engine will generate lotsa crap, some of it will be what you want. Agilent is marketing its new AXI, so their posted *.pdf format presentations as comparision studies between AXI and AOI and ICT capabilities.

Good Luck!

Sam, Are you a SMTA member? If so, contact the Gulf Coast chapter. They are holding a chapter meeting June 11th and the topic of discussion is AOI and AXI solutions with Randy Nelson from Agilent Technologies as the speaker. They might be able to send you all info supplied at the meeting if you cannot attend. Otherwise, contact me offline and I will see what I can do about getting the info to you myself.

Thanks pals, that will be helpfull. If someone have a AXI on the floor, I'd be thankful to have any opinions and data, cuz "In god we trust all others bring data", so I'd like to have some opinions from users too, not only from salesmans :)

Have a nice weekend,

Sam

Sam, I can tell you right now that if you have a low volume hi mix application where the program/job is changing every day, an AXI system is not going to be a good fit. As you alluded to, the programming time is onerous, the fine tuning or tweaking is time consuming, and the cost for these systems is high, typically from a bottom of about 200K and up into the 500K + range, and you need a better than average person to program and take charge of it. In your case, a manual system from someone like VJ is probably a better choice because of the flexibility and lower start up and operating costs. Just so you know, I do not currently work with any Xray/AOI company,so my opinion is based on fact, not a bias toward one technology over another or choice of vendor. AXI has its place, but there is a reason that there are so few companies manufacturing AXI systems v. manual systems....

Seje: Hi mate,

I work in a manufacturing PCBA plant(factory). I hold the title of "Engineer" under our company org chart. Sales and marketing is not within my portfolio. So I am not seriously offended by that poke at salesmen.

However I put myself through engineering school as an IT/PC salesman, so show some "respect" for them. They are only doing their job in a mis-guided manner. Some salesmen can be great sources for learning new stuff within our respective industry. go ahead, try them and mutually better yourselves from such info exchange.

All in all, happy hunting in your AXI,AOI info quest.

If your goal is to inspect solder joints then X-ray is the way to go. AOI is not effective at solder joint and is best at component inspection. Using an AXI or AOI for solder joint inspection requires a lot of engineering time. Don't know any good sites other than from the mfgs. Look at Agilent, Teradyne, Phoenix, Photon Dynamics for X-Ray and AOI, plus CyberOptics, Samsung for just AOI

Hi Ian.

I really didn't mean to under rate salesmans, just have some opinions from users too. I'll give my respect to the salesmans, but still I'd like to have some other hand data too, and most preferably from person who works with those mahcines (sometimes salesmans have a reference client where you can have a look those machines and ask opinions from users).

Pete & Ken

Thanks guys. So it's getting clear that AXI programming and fine tunig takes a lot of time, and that's something that we don't have too much to spend. Next question will be, that can anyone recommed any automatical inspection system for hi mix low vol production? At the best (or worst) case we have job change every one or two hours, and a lot of different pcb's.

Sam,

Like I said, AOI for pre-reflow inspections is the easiest to program and maintain. Each vendor of AOI has its pluses and minuses for programming and performance. Do a careful investigation of each vendor to learn about their machine performance and programming. Heck, there's lots to choose from. Also, consider in-line automatic solder paste inspection as well. They are relativly easy to program and maintain. Measuring solderpaste after printing and checking components before reflow w/ AOI gives you a level of process control and can prevent many post-solder defects, thus significantly reducing rework costs.
